“If you can’t explain it simply, you don’t understand it well enough.” ~ Albert Einstein

I grew up in Pretoria with the love and support of a close-knit family. After completing school, and at the time conscription was in place, I became a Police Officer.

I was stationed at the Sandton Detective Branch and worked as a Commissioned Officer with the rank of Detective Captain by the time I left to pursue law.

While in the Police, I studied and obtained two Diplomas and my first Law Degree.

I served articles as a Candidate Attorney, where I was exposed to various fields of law.

When my articles were done, I started practising law as an Advocate in 2001 for my own account whilst conducting forensic investigations for corporate companies.

I have extensive experience in Forensic Investigations, Criminal Law, and Labour Law.

In 2004, I was admitted as an Attorney of the High Court of South Africa and had practised as such since then.

Much to my surprise, from 2004 onwards, my practice evolved and became a divorce and family law practice. I always say that I did not choose family law – it chose me.

Passionate about practising Divorce and Family Law, I love to use my forensic investigation skills in high-value, complicated divorce matters.

Sometimes I’m quoted in the National Press and interviewed on the Radio regarding divorce and family law matters.

My speciality is complex, high net worth, and international divorces.

Away from the law, I am a family man and an avid aviator, and I enjoy flying small aeroplanes such as Cessna 172s and Bat Hawks.

“Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere.” – Martin Luther King Jr.

I obtained my LLB degree from North West University and have been practicing as an Admitted Attorney for over a decade.

For the past eight years, I have specialised in family law, a field I am deeply passionate about. I take great pride in assisting clients during emotionally challenging times with the empathy and professionalism they need.

Having a particular interest in matters involving children, I am dedicated to advocating for their best interests and ensuring their protection throughout the process.

Regarding family law, I do believe that preserving the family unit—when possible—should be a central goal. This mindset shapes my approach, as I recognise that the parties involved will continue to interact long after my mandate ends.

With that in mind, I strive to apply the law strategically to ensure my clients’ interests are protected while keeping future relationships in mind.

Appearing on behalf of my clients in court is a passion for me and I also have the right of appearance in the High Court and am experienced in handling both opposed and unopposed matters.

My valuable, and mostly successful experiences cover a wide range of family law issues, including divorce, child residency and contact disputes, relocation matters, maintenance, domestic violence, and more.

Committed to providing my clients with effective, compassionate legal representation, I achieve the best possible outcomes while minimising conflict wherever possible.

I believe in maintaining a healthy work-life balance, which allows me to stay grounded and bring a sense of perspective and understanding to my work.

Outside of my professional life, I enjoy spending time with my family, exploring the great outdoors, and unwinding with a good book.

“Leave people better than you found them.” Marvin J. Ashton

After earning my LLB degree from the University of KwaZulu-Natal in 2017, I took a brief pause before immersing myself in the legal field. My journey began in 2019 at a mid-sized law firm specialising in RAF, Family Law, General Litigation, Estates, and Conveyancing.

The path was challenging, with numerous twists and turns along the way. During my articles, I completed the Practical Legal Training course through Lead, balancing office work, court appearances, day-school and night-school lectures in a demanding schedule.

The hard work paid off—I successfully passed all four board exams on my first attempt and was admitted to the Roll of Attorneys in August 2020, after just one year and six months of articles.

Following a year of practice at the same firm post-admission, I joined a boutique law firm in Umhlanga. There, I specialized in Insurance Law and Motor Vehicle Collision Recovery and Litigation, serving as the Head of Litigation among other responsibilities.

My passion for law was ignited at a young age when I observed the limited legal knowledge in my community and realised that navigating legal issues didn’t have to be daunting. This inspired me to be a catalyst for change within the legal field.

I quickly learned that while the legal profession can be challenging, improving the experience for others can shift the narrative over time.

Deeply passionate about my work, I am dedicated to providing the best legal service possible to those I assist. My commitment is fuelled by a strong sense of family and community, and most importantly, by my faith in Jesus Christ.

Take away the Legal title and I am just a homebody, a family girl and an avid shopaholic. I enjoy a little adventure every now and then.

“The journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step.” – Lao Tzu

Completing my Bachelor of Commerce specialising in Law at Varsity College; I went on to achieve my LLB at the IIE MSA (formerly known as Monash South Africa), in 2023.

I enjoy the substantial and in-depth nature of law, and am interested with how it governs our daily lives. The fact that it can help people when they truly are in need of it, captivates my attention and directs my focus in my work.

The law is wide and encompassing and without properly trained lawyers, it can be difficult, or nigh impossible for people to get hold of the assistance, and relief, that they need.

Dedicated to and in my work, I will persist to my highest ability to apply the law according to the requirements of each individual matter.

Each matter involves different lives and different circumstances, it is only natural that the requirements of each would differ.

Although their matters differ, every client receives the same level of care and respect that they all deserve in their matter, an attitude that is entrenched in Martin Vermaak Inc.

The choice I made to join Martin Vermaak Inc., is because they are known for their skill, ability, and passion with the law and how it can assist people in need.

My hope is to benefit from their obsession of using the law to accomplish a better life for others, and improve those qualities within myself so that I can achieve to my highest ability both in skilfully applied documentation and in the Courts.

To this end, Martin Vermaak Inc.’s focus on education and training will be of immense value in my becoming the best possible lawyer I can be, and will surely help propel me further in the future, both in the professional sphere, and life in general.

When I am not in the workplace, I often train Wushu, a martial art in which I have achieved Protea colours on numerous occasions, over 16 years. This has assisted me in developing my lateral thinking abilities as well as the ability to remain well-grounded when challenged by unexpected difficulties. This is a skill as useful in the workplace as it is in life.

I look forward to meeting you at our offices, to assist our Attending Attorneys in ensuring you receive top quality legal service, and the diligence, integrity and humanity, that your individual matter deserves.

“I can’t change the direction of the wind, but I can adjust my sails constantly to reach my destination” – Jimmy Dean

My legal journey began in 2021 when I commenced my articles in Cape Town, gaining experience in general litigation. This early exposure to a variety of legal fields laid a strong foundation for my career. During this time, I worked on matters involving divorces and protection orders, which sparked my interest in family law and ultimately shaped the direction of my practice.

Admitted as an attorney of the High Court in May 2023, I have since gained valuable experience practicing family law in England as a registered foreign lawyer. In this role, I dealt with a wide range of complex and often sensitive matters, requiring careful legal analysis, effective client management, and the ability to perform in a fast-paced and emotionally charged environment.

This experience strengthened my drafting, advisory, and problem-solving skills, while also deepening my understanding of the personal dynamics involved in family law disputes, an insight I now bring to my practice in the South African courts.

I am motivated by the opportunity to assist clients through challenging personal circumstances with professionalism, empathy, and clear legal guidance. I take a pragmatic, no-nonsense approach to legal problem-solving, with a focus on achieving fair and sustainable outcomes.

As a confident and effective communicator, I pride myself on being adaptable, detail-oriented, and able to perform well under pressure while maintaining a high standard of work. I thrive in environments that encourage initiative, continuous learning, and professional growth, and I remain committed to developing both my technical expertise and the interpersonal skills that support strong client relationships.

Outside of legal practice I have a love for the outdoors, the ocean, and just being active in general. I enjoy camping and hiking, as well as diving, fishing and being a terrible surfer when it’s warm outside. During the winter months I can usually be found cuddling up to my dogs trying to stay warm or cooking up a storm in the kitchen.

Growing up in the small town of Eshowe in KwaZulu-Natal, I developed a strong appreciation for integrity, fairness, and the importance of serving others. While my path into the legal profession evolved over time, I found my true calling in family law, where I have the opportunity to make a meaningful difference in the lives of individuals and families during some of their most challenging moments.

I obtained my LLB degree from the University of Zululand in 2016 and completed my articles at a law firm in Newcastle, where I gained valuable experience in criminal law, civil litigation, family law, divorce matters, deceased estates, debt collection, and general litigation.

This experience sharpened my analytical thinking, attention to detail, and ability to navigate complex financial matters. In family law disputes, particularly those involving the division of assets and financial considerations arising from divorce, this background enables me to approach each case with a practical and commercially informed perspective.

Family law is the area of practice I am most passionate about because it allows me to help people rebuild their lives after experiencing conflict, uncertainty, and trauma. “The only person you are destined to become is the person you decide to be”Ralph Waldo Emerson

As, Practice Manager of Martin Vermaak Attorneys Inc., I report to Martin Vermaak.

I consider myself the most fortunate of all the staff members because I handle a little bit of everything each day giving me a complete overview of the firm and its many success stories. Each victory is a team effort and we all do our best in our individual capacities to make us a stronger team to give our client the highest standard of service.

My work is the day to day management of the practice. It affords me the good fortune to be involved daily with each member of our Legal and Administrative teams, dealing with various service providers and, even better, I also meet the clients!

Work days include meetings re: strategising, forward planning, management projects, staff management, HR & recruitment, marketing, and writing for several websites.

A wordsmith with over 40 years experience, I enjoy regularly writing – practice procedures, training documents, work manuals for the staff, also articles for the websites and editing drafting by staff members.

Every morning I look forward to going to the office, referring to it as ‘my happy place’!

That may sound odd as we deal with a great deal of sad clients (often emotionally damaged people) who have suffered indignities in one way or another.

The ‘happy’ part is I have the pleasure of being a part of the team that rights the wrongs and addresses the inhumanities perpetrated against our precious clients.

Usually our clients don’t just need legal assistance but also require the support of our empathy and need to be treated with care and respect.

Our legal service is of the highest professional standard and our team continuously undergo training, both inhouse and outsourced to keep our client service standard second to none.

Born and educated in England, I became Human Resources and Training Manager for the European Division of a multinational firm, with HQ in London; travelling to work at all of their European branches on a rotational basis.

This was an excellent grounding for my current post at Martin Vermaak Attorneys Inc. which I have held since July 2007.

My hobbies include the love of all music – classical and otherwise; writing lyrics; medieval history; reading; and being an authentic wordsmith.
